Why Cat-Ski Backup Matters: A Conversation with Northern Escape
Storm days don’t have to stop the skiing. Northern Escape Heli Skiing explains how their cat-ski backup keeps guests skiing even when helicopters can’t fly.

Weather is one of the biggest uncertainties in heli-skiing. Storms can create incredible powder conditions, but heavy snowfall or poor visibility can occasionally make it unsafe for helicopters to fly.
That’s why Northern Escape Heli Skiing built something unique into their program: cat-ski backup. When I spoke with their team, they explained that this feature dramatically increases the amount of skiing guests get during their trip. On storm days when helicopters can’t safely fly, the operation simply switches to snowcats and continues skiing. As they describe it, “we transition to snowcat skiing… so you’ll maximize your time on the slopes, regardless of how hard it snows.”
How Snowcat Backup Works
This isn’t just a small backup plan either. Their cat-ski terrain spans thousands of acres, with runs reaching roughly 600 vertical metres through pillows, tree skiing, and steep lines.
By combining helicopters and snowcats, Northern Escape is one of the few operators in the world able to keep guests skiing even in variable conditions. As their team puts it, “your holidays are short and the days precious,” so the goal is to keep guests enjoying powder as much as possible.
Lodges for Every Skiing Style
Northern Escape offers three lodge options, each designed for different preferences and group sizes:
- Yellow Cedar Lodge is a classic Canadian log‑timber chalet on the banks of the Skeena River that sleeps up to 16 guests in single or double rooms, with ensuite bathrooms, lounge spaces, chef‑prepared meals, and amenities like sauna, outdoor jacuzzi, and fitness facilities. It’s considered one of the best value heli-ski packages available.
- Mountain Lodge is a modern, fly‑in boutique lodge nestled on a remote alpine lake deep in the Skeena Mountains, accommodating up to 10 guests in private ensuite rooms with gourmet meals, outdoor hot tub, and sauna.
- Skeena Spey is an ultra-exclusive private lodge for small groups of up to five guests, with dedicated chefs, serving staff, a massage therapist, and premium accommodations tailored for private heli-skiing packages.
