What Is Heli-Skiing?
Heli-Skiing is backcountry skiing or snowboarding accessed by helicopter rather than chairlifts. Each day, guests are flown directly into untouched alpine bowls, glaciers, and old-growth forests for the ultimate powder experience.
How Is Heli-Skiing Different From Resort Skiing?
Unlike resort skiing, Heli-Skiing offers complete freedom: no crowds, no lift lines, and no groomed runs.
What Is Cat-Skiing?
Cat-Skiing is backcountry skiing or snowboarding accessed by a snowcat (a specialised, enclosed tracked vehicle) rather than a helicopter. Guests are transported into remote terrain, where they ski guided runs in natural, ungroomed snow. Some heli-ski lodges also offer Cat-Skiing as a backup option on poor weather days.
Where Are the Heli-Ski Programs Located?
We work with several operators across British Columbia, as well as in New Zealand, Iceland, Greenland, Alaska and Chile. Each operator has its own travel logistics, lodge amenities, and terrain available. We can help you select the lodge and experience that best suits your plans.
When Is the Best Time to Go Heli-Skiing?
In British Columbia, lodges operate from December through April. January and February offer deep, dry powder, while March and April provide longer days, milder temperatures, and excellent spring conditions.
What Level of Skier or Snowboarder Should I Be?
Programs and lodges vary by difficulty. Guests should be strong intermediate to expert skiers or snowboarders, comfortable in powder, trees, and varied terrain.
Do I Need to Be Super Fit for Heli-Skiing?
A good level of fitness is recommended to maximize enjoyment. Endurance and leg strength make long days on the mountain easier and more fun.
Does Heli Dreams Charge a Booking Fee on Heli-Ski Experiences?
No. We offer the same pricing as direct and get paid by the companies we work with.
Can Heli Dreams Help With Flights and Hotel Bookings?

Can Snowboarders Go Heli-Skiing?
Absolutely. Snowboarders are very welcome.
Is Heli-Skiing Safe?
Heli-Skiing is an adventure sport with inherent risks, including weather, snow conditions, and backcountry terrain. Safety is always the top priority: guides are ACMG/IFMGA certified, lodges use modern avalanche safety equipment, and all guests receive safety training before skiing. Teams are trained to manage risks to the highest industry standards. Experienced guides and certified operators help manage those risks, but no activity is completely risk-free.
What Happens If the Weather Is Bad?
Each lodge has specific policies. If conditions prevent flying, guests enjoy lodge amenities, gourmet meals, and optional activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or archery. Some lodges offer "down day" credits, rebooking options, or Cat-Skiing as a backup.
What Avalanche Safety Equipment Is Provided?
Guests are provided with a transceiver, avalanche airbag backpack, probe, and shovel. Training in their use is also included before your first run.
What Kind of Terrain Is Available?
Expect wide-open bowls, glacier skiing, gladed tree runs, and steep chutes and couloirs. Terrain varies by lodge. We can discuss your ideal terrain over a call.
Do the Lodges Have Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is included at most lodges, but speeds vary. Remote lodges may have slower connections. Please talk to us about which option will suit your needs.
How Many People Ski in a Group?
Group sizes vary by lodge, typically 3–11 guests per helicopter. Private groups or exclusive heli options are also available.
Can Families Heli-Ski?
Yes. Families are welcome, provided each member is a strong intermediate or advanced skier. Private trips are recommended to tailor terrain and pace to your family's preferences.
What Happens If I Get Tired or Injured?
Guides monitor all guests closely. If needed, the pace can be adjusted, or you can be flown back to the lodge.
Can Non-Skiers Join the Trip?
Some operators offer non-skier packages or activities. Availability varies, so please contact us for details.
Do the Lodges Cater for Dietary Requirements?
Absolutely. Please inform us prior to booking of any allergies or dietary preferences so we can confirm that the chefs will be able to accommodate.
How Much Does Heli-Skiing Cost?

What's Included in the Package Price?
Typically, packages include: Lodging (single or twin share), All meals and snacks, Professional guides and heli-skiing, Avalanche safety gear, Ski or snowboard rental, Transfers and logistics. Some lodges also include spa treatments, massage, and alcoholic beverages for fully inclusive experiences.
How Do I Get to the Heli-Ski Lodge?
Packages often include ground or chartered transfers from airports, and some may even include a helicopter transfer directly to the lodge. Exact details depend on the lodge you select, so talk to us about your options to find the transfer that best suits your trip.
Do I Need Travel Insurance for Heli-Skiing?
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance covering cancellations, medical expenses, evacuation, and adventure sports is strongly recommended.
How Far in Advance Should I Book?
Peak season trips often sell out 12–18 months in advance. Early booking secures your preferred dates and may offer early booking benefits.
Which Lodge or Operator Is Best?
Each lodge has its own character and terrain. Heli Dreams helps guide you to the lodge and program that best match your skill, goals, and desired experience.
Do I Need to Sign a Liability Waiver?
Yes. Guests must sign the lodge's Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, and Assumption of Risks Agreement, as well as a Heli Dreams waiver. These are completed prior to payment and usually once again before skiing.
How Many Runs Are Typical Per Day?
Lodges average 8–15 runs per day, depending on weather and daylight hours.
What Makes Heli-Skiing in British Columbia Special?
British Columbia is the birthplace of heli-skiing. Its deep snowpack, varied terrain, and reliable winter storms create some of the world's best conditions.
Do I Need a Visa to Enter Canada?
Citizens of certain countries do not need a visa for short visits (tourism, business, or transit). However, travelers from visa-exempt countries such as Australia must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before flying to Canada. Individuals with a criminal record (including DUI/DWI) may be considered inadmissible and require special authorization. Canadian citizens holding dual citizenship must travel to Canada with a valid Canadian passport.
What about Visa Requirements for Other Countries?
Whether you need a visa depends on your passport: citizens of visa-exempt countries only need an eTA, while most others must apply for a visa. Check with us to confirm your requirements and ensure smooth travel!
What Is the Cancellation Policy?
Refunds are subject to lodge-specific terms. Written cancellation is required. Travel insurance is highly recommended to protect against unforeseen changes. Exact details depend on the lodge you select, so talk to us about your options and we can share the cancellation policy.
